Who this is for
Anyone with vans, trucks or cars titled to the business, and anyone whose staff drive their own cars on company errands. The second group is the one that catches people out.
What it typically covers
Liability. Injury and property damage caused by a vehicle used for the business.
Physical damage. Collision and comprehensive on owned vehicles.
Hired and non-owned auto. Claims from rented vehicles, and from employees driving their own cars for work.
Cargo and tools. Property carried in the vehicle, on a scheduled or blanket basis.
Uninsured motorist. The same protection as a personal policy, at commercial limits.
What it usually doesn’t cover
Personal use by anyone not listed as a driver on the policy
Employees injured while driving, which is a workers’ compensation matter
Vehicles not scheduled on the policy, including one bought last week
Wear, mechanical failure and tyres
Livery and rideshare work, unless the policy is written for it
The test that decides the claim
It is not who owns the vehicle, it is what the vehicle was doing. A personal car making a delivery is a commercial exposure, and a personal policy can decline it. If any driving supports the business, the business needs the policy, even when the title says otherwise.
How we’d approach it
We list every vehicle and every driver, including the ones using their own cars, then confirm hired and non-owned coverage is on the policy. That endorsement costs very little and closes the gap most small businesses do not know they have.
